Shruti Choudhry: From Lok Sabha MP to BJP MLA - A Political Journey Rooted in Legacy
Her legal background gives her a sharp, data-driven approach to parliamentary debates on Women and Child Development and Irrigation policy.
Shruti Choudhry, a lawyer-turned-politician from Haryana's prominent Chaudhary Bansi Lal family, entered electoral politics after her father's passing in 2005. She won the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2009 Indian general election under the Indian National Congress, defeating INLD's Ajay Singh Chautala by over 55,000 votes - continuing a family legacy that saw her grandfather win the seat three times and her father twice. During her tenure as Member of Parliament (2009–2014), she served on Lok Sabha committees for agriculture and women empowerment. After being sidelined by Congress ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in favour of a Hooda loyalist, Shruti and her mother Kiran Choudhry resigned from Congress in June 2024 citing differences with party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda. They joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 19 June 2024 in the presence of CM Nayab Singh Saini and former CM Manohar Lal Khattar. Political analysts noted her induction could strengthen BJP's support among the Jat community in the Bhiwani region. In a crowning moment, Shruti Choudhry won the Tosham Assembly seat in the 2024 Haryana Assembly Elections, defeating the Congress candidate by 14,257 votes, marking her successful transition from national to state politics.
